Spelling City! A new way for students to study spelling!

author Arischa Conner
Spellingcity.com is a website that will allow students to load in their spelling words and study! The words you select for study are prounounced, used in a sentence, spelled letter by letter and there are games that students can play for understanding of the terms. What a great new way for students to study! Mrs. Anderson, Information Technology specialist at Lower Richland High School found this website, among others while reading the Teacher Librarian Journal. She is an avid reader of journals that house lots of information and different sites that can be used in education. Check it Out!  Mrs. Anderson highly recommends these other websites as well:
Math Fact Cafe- for elementary school teachers and students
The Writing Wizard- can quickly create worksheets for handwriting skills practice.  Great for ESL students!
Awesome Highlighter- allows you to highlight information on websites

Technology Today

author Arischa Conner

Technology is a useful tool that teachers can use to engage students in the classroom. If technology in fact aids in the success of students in the classroom, why is it not being more widely utilized by classroom teachers? What are some effective uses of technology in the classroom? Is drill and practice an effective tool? I don't think so. Technology, used in the correct manner, can help students to develop higher order thinking skills, but first teachers must be able to use technology effectively. In our district, there are five technology educators whose aim is to do just that--arm teachers with the necessary skills to use technology appropriately in their classrooms. If you would like to learn more about what we do, how we do and why we do what we do, please visit us at our ITS website.  We are here to support teachers in any way that we can to ensure their successful use of various technology tools.

Mill Creek Elementary

Today I was at Mill Creek elementary school working with the teachers using the Standards Search feature in Destiny. The media specialist, Carol Ferriole, worked with me collaboratively to introduce the new software to teachers. The teachers were very excited to learn about it. They can choose their grade level and subject, and find websites, articles and books in thier media center that are correlated to the state standards.  It's a great resource that I hope all teachers in Richland One have the opportunity to use.

Meadowfield Media Matters

author Arischa Conner
At Meadowfield Elementary school today, I was focusing on how to help teachers with Paideia projects that they are working on. Meadowfield Elementary will be the only Paideia School in the state of South Carolina in 2009. The media specialist there, Lindsay, has created an awesome blog for her Media center. Her blog, Meadowfield Media Matters, is an awesome way for her to communicate information to the faculty and staff at her school. The old-fashioned newletters can now be upstaged by multi-media opportunities such as a blog! This blog feature is supported by the eChalk webpages that each teacher in the district has. Good job Lindsay!

Lower Richland High School

Today, I worked with IB students at Lower Richland High School in Ms. W's class. The students were excited to learn other ways they can present materials other than using Power Point. I showed the students VoiceThread, which allows students to comment on images that they import into their thread. This is a free web 2.0 tool where students can create an account and create presentations. I talked a little bit about Photo Story 3, and showed examples of how it can be used as well. I went over some of the tools in the lesson activity toolkit in the Smart Notebook software, and they were really excited to learn about the various things that they could do with the items in the toolkit. It was a very eventful day for here in the Diamond Mine. I hope that other teachers across the Lower Richland Cluster will invite me into their classrooms to work with their students as well. Later on this year, I will be working with 2 english teachers and their students at Hopkins Middle school on a project in their class using Movie Maker, a program that allows students to create movies from pictures or video. I love working with students, and I look forward to working more closely with the students and teachers in the Lower Richland Cluster!

Southeast Middle School and Hopkins Elementary

author Arischa Conner
Hello Lower Richland Cluster! This week has been very busy for me as I provided professional development opportunities in two of the schools in the Lower Richland Cluster, Hopkins Elementary and Southeast Middle School. Both school are located in Hopkins, SC.  Hopkins Elementary received training for two days in using eChalk.  Please click on the link for Hopkins Elementary and check out their eChalk page.  The teachers have been working very hard to use eChalk as a tool for communication for parents and the surrounding community.  At Southeast Middle school, they have a model classroom which houses a Smartboard, an Airliner and a Smart document camera.  I visited with the teacher in the model classroom to show her some new features in the version 10 software.  A representative from Multi Media Services came out after school on Tuesday to show a demonstration of how the whole system works.  I will be there to support the teacher with using the different tools in her class and coming up with exciting ways to implement the system in the class.  It is a math class, and one way she is going to use the smart board is using Smart View, a program that has an emulator for use with Texas instruments calculators.  Please stay tuned for more exciting things happening in the Lower Richland Cluster!
